William stated that he was born in Cheshire, on the 13th September 1871. He enlisted at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, 17th July 1915, stating his occupation as a harness maker, and his next of kin as M. Andrews, of 356, 15th Street West, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He had previously served with the 2nd Battalion, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, the 6th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, and the 52nd Prince Albert Volunteers.
He was five feet eight and a half inches in height, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair, and he belonged to the Church of England.
